2022 Press Release

Tour of the Floating Liveaboard Residences of the Southwest DC Waterfront to be held Saturday, October 1, 2022

WASHINGTON DC, 20024 - It's back! Southwest DC's colorful liveaboard community will open its doors to visitors on Saturday, October 1 from 10 AM to 2 PM.

The self-guided tour of liveaboards at the Wharf Marina provides visitors the opportunity to visit 20+ of the most fun and unique homes in Washington DC.  Vessels open for touring include houseboats, housebarges, cruisers, and sailboats.  Boat owners and hosts will also be available to answer questions about the boat-homes and the liveaboard lifestyle.

This is the first time that the floating homes of the Wharf Marina have been open to the public since the completion of the Wharf Marina in May 2022. The Wharf has positively redefined the Southwest waterfront, and the chance to tour this unique community is not to be missed.

Advance tickets are required ($25 per person) as the tour is expected to sell out. Purchase tickets online via our web site www.dchouseboat.org. Tickets will not be available on the day of the tour. A discounted ticket price of $20 is available to the marina's neighbors in the 20024 zip code. Proceeds from the tour ticket sales will benefit local charities in Southwest DC, including Amidon-Bowen Elementary School PTA, Potomac Riverkeeper, DC Sail's youth programs, Southwest Methodist Church Food Pantry, and St Augustine's neighborhood programs.

The marina is located on Washington DC's Southwest waterfront, along the Washington Channel. Historically, the waterfront was the portal for newcomers and visitors to the Nation's capital, as well as a busy center for maritime trade and fishing.

The Wharf is just steps from the National Mall and its many monuments and museums, and features the largest liveaboard community on the East Coast. For over 35 years, this marina has been home to a diverse group including professionals, families, artists, retirees, scientists, congresspeople, members of the military, and many more.

The Southwest DC Boat-Home Tour is sponsored by the Gangplank Slipholders Association, which is a nonprofit volunteer organization representing the boaters of the Marina, and the Port of Washington Yacht Club, a nonprofit social club promoting boating and Potomac stewardship. Additional information may be requested by emailing GPSAtour@gmail.com or visiting www.dchouseboat.org.
